Kareen Hague

Kareen Hague is an experimental fine artist working from her home studio in
Markham, Ontario. Describing her style as abstracted realism, Kareen creates
work inspired by nature, botanicals, trees, water, and landscape. Through
layered papers, textured mediums, textiles and using traditional and
unconventional mark-making tools, she builds richly textured surfaces that blur
the line between realism and impressionism. Her paintings invite viewers to
pause, look deeper, and discover the detail hidden within each composition. Travel
and time in our countryside continue to influence her work.

Years of experimentation with colour and texture have shaped Kareen’s
distinctive visual language. Colourful palettes and textured surfaces create
depth and luminosity, allowing colours to shift and interact organically across
the canvas. She is drawn to layering colour and contrast to evoke joy,
curiosity, and connection. Her recent explorations with raw canvas and textiles
continue to expand her process and artistic direction, bringing new energy and
materiality to her evolving body of work.

Primarily self-taught, Kareen has painted throughout her life and was raised
in a deeply creative family. Her mother was an artist, while her father worked
as a woodworker, sculptor, carver, and educator, fostering an environment rich
in artistic exploration. Kareen has completed self-directed residencies at
Château d’Orquevaux in Orquevaux, France, Hôtel Saint-Valière in
Sainte-Valière, France, and most recently Aviario Studios in Portugal. She
currently works monthly with an artist mentor through Mastrius.com. Kareen is
also a Liquitex Demo Artist for the Toronto area and serves as Treasurer on the
Board of Directors for the Toronto Artists’ Network and recently joined the
board of the Varley-McKay Art Foundation. Her work is exhibited in outdoor art
shows and group exhibitions throughout the year and can be found in private
collections across Canada, the United States, and France.
