Exploring Mixed Media & Abstract Art, Level 1 (Tuesdays Nov 3rd & Nov 10th)
This is a two-part course; your place is reserved for both dates when you register.
Curious about mixed media and abstract art but not sure where to begin? Level 1is designed to give you a strong foundation while encouraging you to experiment, loosen up and discover your own way of creating.
This class takes place over two 2-hour sessions.
Tuesday, November 3 and Tuesday, November 10, 2026, from 7 pm to 9 pm.
Across the two sessions, students will create at least two mixed media artworks, with a third if time allows.
In this hands-on class, artist and creative educator Jenn Best will introduce you to her layered approach to mixed media using acrylic paint, acrylic inks, collage, charcoal, mark-making and a variety of other tools and materials.
You’ll explore fundamentals that help bring an abstract painting together, including colour, value, composition, contrast, texture and layering, while learning how to respond to what is happening on the canvas rather than starting with a predetermined outcome.
Through demonstrations and guided exercises, Jenn will show you how to build a painting layer by layer. We’ll experiment with materials, make marks, add and cover layers, reveal what’s underneath and begin to understand how different elements can work together to create depth and interest.
While you’ll learn real art skills and techniques, you’re not expected to copy a finished painting. The goal is to give you the tools, understanding and confidence to begin making creative decisions of your own.
Level 1 is perfect for beginners, as well as artists new to mixed media or abstract art who want to explore a more intuitive, layered approach to painting.
No previous mixed media or abstract painting experience is necessary. All materials are provided.
Come ready to experiment, learn, make a little mess and see where the process takes you.
Want to keep exploring? Exploring Mixed Media & Abstract Art: Level 2 will be offered in November and will build on the techniques and concepts introduced in Level 1.
